“Viacom has pledged Rs 951 crore, or INR 7.09 crore each match, for the next five years (2023-27)
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Monday that Viacom 18 has won the bid for the media rights to the forthcoming Women’s IPL for a whopping Rs 951 crore for a period of five years. On Monday, the T20 League auction was held in Mumbai by the cricket board.
After pay equity, today’s bidding for media rights for the Women’s IPL represents another historic mandate, according to a tweet by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.
In March 2023, the Indian cricket board is anticipated to launch its ambitious franchise-based Twenty20 competition for women players, similar to the Indian Premier League. In December 2022, the BCCI issued an invitation for media companies to submit bids for the broadcast rights of a long-desired Indian cricket championship.
The BCCI announced the release of a tender for the right to own and run a franchise in the inaugural Women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) season later this year earlier this week.
The cricket governing body issued a statement to the media on January 3 stating, ‘The detailed terms and conditions governing the tender process, including eligibility requirements, the process for submitting bids, proposed team’s rights and obligations, etc. are contained in the “Invitation to Tender” (“ITT”), which will be made available upon receipt of a non-refundable fee of INR 5,00,000 (Rupees Five Lakhs Only) plus any applicable Goods and Services Tax. The process for acquiring the ITT documents is detailed in Annex A of this publication. The ITT will remain for sale until January 21, 2023.”
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah stated last summer, in reference to the tournament, “We are in contact with other Boards about the likely timeframe when all elite players will be accessible. I can guarantee that the value of the league, teams, and media rights will astound everyone.”
