According to a post allegedly made by an Amazon India employee on Grapevine, an anonymous community app for Indian professionals, employees are “weeping in the workplace” after receiving news of layoffs.
An Amazon employee highlighted bleak conditions at the company’s India offices in the wake of widespread layoffs. The reports noted that the e-commerce behemoth has begun layoffs that will effect 1 percent of its workers in India. This month, around 1,000 employees are likely to be terminated, and the process has already begun for some.
A post titled “Amazon India Current Condition” was published yesterday by an employee using the alias “Batman1.”
In his article, he stated that 75 percent of his staff had been laid off and that he was unmotivated to work despite still having a job. The individual did not disclose his department of employment.
“75% of my team has departed. “Even though I’m among the remaining 25 percent, I’m no longer inspired to work,” the Amazon employee added in his Grapevine post. “They are terminating employees in cabins. People in the office are crying.”
A screenshot of the message has gone viral on Twitter, accumulating over 4.5 million views and several comments.
According to a story in India Today, layoffs have affected numerous departments in cities such as Gurugram and Bengaluru. Affected employees were notified via email and requested to meet with the leadership team on a certain date to receive answers to their issues.
According to the article, Amazon gave five months of severance money to laid-off employees.
In November of last year, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy confirmed the company’s intention to conduct mass layoffs. “We intend to cut just over 18,000 positions. Several teams are impacted, but the majority of role eliminations are occurring in our Amazon Stores and PXT businesses,” Jassy noted in a January 4 update.
